Our world is getting more and more technologically advanced. Many people work at companies and in industries that didn’t even exist 15 years ago. I work on the SEO team at my company, which is a perfect example of a whole new job genre that was created in the past two decades.
The internet and social media have evolved time and time again over the past few years. I personally believe that, eventually, the majority of jobs will be online. Even banks are going online and forgoing the traditional freestanding branches. It’s only a matter of time before nearly all jobs require some sort of tech knowledge.
Whether you’re a freelancer, a college student, a small business owner or a 9-5 employee, you need to start a blog or a website as soon as possible. Now is the time to learn the ins and outs of websites, to make yourself more marketable as an employee, and to start your own little business on your corner of the internet.
10 Reasons Why You Need to Start a Blog TODAY!
A blog serves as your resume. A one-page Word document doesn’t stand a chance against a personal online portfolio. Not only will you appear way more professional and be able to showcase more of your work, but your resume is out there for the world to see. I got my full-time job because of my blog.
It provides an additional form of income. Enough said! Blogging is a fantastic way to pay off debt, save more and pursue your dreams. It doesn’t come easy, but I believe earning a living by blogging is possible for anyone.
I’ve been blogging for 2 1/2 years and just quit my full-time job to focus on my blog! I’ve consistently been making $2,000 or more a month! It’s imperative to your small business. Do you own a business or hope to start one in the future? If so, you need a site for your business. That’s how you stay in touch with your customers, grow your business and get your name out there. Networking is now done almost fully online. Use that to your advantage.
You’ll make friends. I’ve met so many awesome people online and one person in particular who I’m now fortunate enough to call one of my best friends. Had it not been for blogging, I never would have met her. I started my blog when we first moved to NC and I knew no one. Blogging prevented me from getting homesick or depressed. Thank you, fellow bloggers, for being so kind!
It’s challenging. My coworkers make fun of me because I am truly the least technologically-inclined person on the planet, yet I have a relatively successful blog. I’m completely self-taught. If I can run a blog, trust me, you can too. And it’s challenging for all types of skill levels, which I happen to like.
You get to be creative. Blogging is no longer just about writing. You also get to market your blog, promote it, pay to promote it, start a newsletter, and more. The creativity that encompasses blogging is just out of this world.
You get to help people. Even if you’re just blogging about your life, there’s a good chance there is at least one person who is interested and enjoying what you have to say. If you’re good at something or want to share something with the world, there’s no better outlet than a blog. You have millions of people at your finger tips – do something good!
You’ll get unexpected opportunities. Blogs are a platform most brands are already involved with. A blog gives you a voice and an audience. If you have the right audience or a large audience, brands are going to reach out to you and want to work with you – and they could pay in the thousands. You could also land freelancing opportunities, a full-time job or even a book deal.
You get to do something you love. The beauty of a blog is it’s completely in your control. This blog is a personal finance blog, but I’m in the process of creating a brand-new blog that encompasses all of my interests. I look forward to waking up each morning knowing that I get to work on something I’m so passionate about!
And finally, why not?! What is stopping you from starting a blog? The initial investment (through Bluehost) is just $3.49 per month, and you get your domain name for free. That’s it! And the return on your money could potentially be life-changing.

I agree these are all good reasons and many of the reasons I started.
Spot on, Sarah! My husband has many years of writing experience and started freelancing in 2014. He recently finished creating his online portfolio through pressfolios.com. It’ll be nice to just point potential clients to his online portfolio instead of trying to put together samples each time he applies for a gig.
That’s awesome!! Oh yes, freelancers should absolutely have a portfolio or blog! I use Contently, but I’ve been thinking of buying my own name as a domain haha. Does your husband freelance FT from home?!
He currently freelances part-time. He’s been in the communications/public relations field for many years and that’s what he does for his full-time job. He has a journalism degree and worked as a newspaper reporter when he first started out.
He was blessed to find his current freelance gig. He works as a journalist for an infographic company. He does a lot of the research and compiling/organizing of the data for various projects before it goes off to the graphic designer.
Having a blog is a great way to start a business, be creative, earn extra income etc, which is as what you say here! I sense you’re close to launching a new one too 😉 haha
Cheers
Hi Jef! Yep – I sure am!! I am getting the marketing/social media in place first, and I want to have about 10 posts up before I launch. I feel like I’ve learned SO much through this blog, that I’m really hoping my new one will be a success!! Hope you have a nice weekend!!
Hmm who is this mystery woman you now consider one of your BFFs?! 😉 I loved this list, and I would have to say that the one that rings the most true for me too is making new friends. Seriously, where would I be without you in my life? I never could have fathomed all of the amazing relationships that blogging has brought my way. What a blessing that is!!
